Newly-crowned Rose of Tralee is a former Castlebar Celtic FC star

A MAYO soccer club was celebrating last night when the winner of the Rose of Tralee was announced.

Offaly Rose Jennifer Byrne, who was selected for the prestigious title, starred for Castlebar Celtic in the FAI Women's National League for two seasons, 2011 and 2012.

She played in defence and was equally comfortable in a full-back and centre-half role, possessing a fine ability to turn an opposition's player swiftly and clear the ball from the penalty area with long head-outs.

Jennifer joined the club shortly after starring for the Republic of Ireland a the FIFA Under-17 World Cup finals in Trinidad and Tobago.

Said James Murray, who was chairman of Castlebar Celtic FC at the time: “She was very popular with her teammates and we are thrilled with her success and we wish her all the best.'.
