Killala AFC members receive their prize for winning the Aviva/FAI Club of the Month.Mayo League Division One side Killala AFC have won the Aviva Club of the Month award for April.
Members of the club travelled to Dublin for the award ceremony hosted by Aviva and the FAI, which took place at the Park Plaza Hotel in Tyrellstown on July 14.
Killala were presented with a cheque for €1,500 and plaque in recognition of the achievement by FAI president David Blood.
The national awards, which are now in their fifth year, recognise the finest grassroots football clubs in the country.
With only eight out of an estimated 28,000 clubs set to win the monthly accolade this year, the award represents an excellent achievement for the north Mayo side.
Mr. Blood revealed there had been 'a record number of entries' and that Killala had beaten off some very stiff opposition from some of the top clubs in the country.
Killala were judged by a panel on six different criteria including administration, coaching, participation numbers, facilities and contribution to the community in the form of soccer camps and club events, and become only the second Mayo team after Manulla in 2007 to win the prize.
The club now goes forward to the club of the year awards where they will compete with the seven other monthly winners.
This will take place at the FAI annual general meeting in Wexford town on August 21. Manulla won the overall club of the year award in 2007.
At this year's annual meeting, each club will make a five-minute presentation on their background and achievements before taking questions from the judging panel for a further 20 minutes.
The winning club will receive a cheque for €5,000 and will then go forward to compete against other grassroots sides from across Europe for the annual UEFA accolade.
Congratulations to Killala on their magnificent achievement and the very best of luck to them in next month's competition.
