A kitchen knife was waved in the air outside a pub in Ballinrobe, resulting in a three-month suspended prison sentence for the offender.
Twenty-two-year-old Paddy Sweeney, with an address at 3 Bridge Street, Ballinrobe, came to garda attention at 11.40 p.m. on September 29 last.
He was on Bridge Street in the town, waving a knife in the air and shouting at a number of people standing outside a pub.
When he saw the patrol car he ran down the street into a lane, where he threw away the knife, which had a three-inch blade.
Mr. Sean Acton, solicitor, explained how a row developed in the pub in which Sweeney was the victim. He produced the knife in an effort to intimidate the other parties.
Paddy Sweeney had no previous convictions.
Judge Mary Devins said the knife looked innocuous but it could actually kill someone.
She fined Sweeney €300 and imposed a three-month prison sentence, suspended for one year.
