An urgent review of the Health Act 1970 covering the conditions of qualification under the long-term illness scheme is being called for by Mayo Fine Gael TD John O'Mahony.

In a letter to transport minister, Noel Dempsey, the president of the Claremorris Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Eugene Waldron, said there is a growing fear that the final phases of the Western Rail Corridor will be long-fingered while at the same time the Navan line to the minister's constituency is being fast-tracked.

Thousands of families across Ireland will have no State support before their children go back to school because Government has botched the back to school allowance, Fine Gael Social Protection spokesman, Deputy Michael Ring, has warned.
He explained: "More than 60 per cent of families in some parts of Ireland have still not received the back to school clothing and footwear allowance.
