On Newport Road, Castlebar, the carnage continues. Last Friday evening, a further road traffic collision took place near the junction for the entrance to the new cemetery. Three cars in all were involved. Thankfully, nobody was seriously injured. Local residents are living in fear because the litany of road accidents at the location is continuing.
According to the Mayor of Castlebar, Councillor Ger Deere, safety signage and some other temporary measures
have been put in place but road traffic collisions are still occurring. Councillor Deere stated: "A total of €75,000 was allocated some weeks ago to perform the required improvement works.
Local residents are genuinely afraid to leave their own houses as the risk toward pedestrians and drivers is demonstrated by the number of accidents in recent weeks. Mayo County Council is playing 'Russian Roulette' with people's lives.
"If the improvement works had commenced when the problems were first highlighted a number of weeks ago by me, those works would more than likely be completed by now.
"It is also obvious the temporary measures are not working and cannot continue to be relied upon as a preventative safety measure. The funding is already in place and improvement works should commence immediately as a matter of urgency."
