Local Labour Party Councillor Harry Barrett has welcomed the completion of the long awaited public path and lighting for the residents of Whitehorse Lane in the town. Councillor Barrett had a motion passed for the connection of the estate to the town footpath network and had monies allocated to the project in last year's budget.
He stated: "Finally the people of Whitehorse Lane estate can walk on proper lit footpath into town.
"I had a motion passed last year that allocated €50,000 to this project and I'm delighted that it is now complete.
"Town council staff must be highly commended for such a professional job, under severe weather conditions over the last few months.
"I am thrilled young mothers and the elderly living on the estate can now access the shops without having to walk on the road.
"It was highly dangerous and was a promise I made to the residents during the local elections in 2009.
"The battle moves on now to the job of taking over more estates in Castlebar and dealing with the appalling condition of some of the paths and lighting systems within these estates," he added.
