The late Micheál MullaheyThe late Micheál MullaheyTHE family of a prominent Castlebar man who died tragically on January 10 last have spoken openly about life’s troubles and the need to talk about them.

The wife, parents, brothers and sisters of the late Micheál Mullahy, a native of Kennedy Gardens, issued a poignant statement to the local media in the aftermath of his funeral.

It read: “Last Tuesday we lost a beautiful man. Mick had everything to live for.

“He had a beautiful wife with whom he shared great love. He had two sweet little girls whom he adored.

“He had a mum and dad, three brothers and three sisters, and an extended family who surrounded him with love all his life. He was fortunate to have had a great circle of friends.

“Mick also had a very successful career and all the comforts of this world’s material things. He was the last person we expected to leave us so suddenly.

“Our hope is that some good may come from Mick’s tragic passing. No person is without problems or struggles and nobody should feel or be alone with them.

“On this very sad occasion may we encourage all to talk about anything that they may have difficulty with in their lives, from the smallest to the largest problem.

“Can we also encourage everyone to listen to others. Friends and family are there to help you and you will find a great understanding in people. Thank you, and may God bless you all.”

The statement was signed by Micheál’s wife Cathy, his parents John Joe and Enda, brothers Sean, Ger and Kevin, and sisters Dolores, Mary and Carmel.

In his 40s, Mr. Mullahy was the retail sales manager with Corrib Oil and was a member of the national council of Spar retailers. He had previously worked for the SuperValu supermarket chain.

Micheál, who resided at The Brambles, Pontoon Road, won an All-Ireland minor football championship medal with Mayo in 1985 and starred for Castlebar Mitchels GAA Club at many levels over the years. He was a native of Kennedy Gardens, Castlebar.

Burial took place in the New Cemetery on Friday following Requiem Mass for the repose of his soul in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.

The huge turnout was a testimony to the high esteem in which Mr. Mullahy was held in the community.

Elected members of Castlebar Town Council adjourned their monthly meeting as a mark of respect to him. He was a founder member of the Castlebar Tidy Towns Committee.
