Sir,

I wish to express my outrage at the political parties in Leinster House, especially the women who by their silence have shown us they are willing to live and work in a male dominated society as long as it pays them well for betraying their sisters.

In the recent scandal about members of the Garda Siochána threatening women with rape during interview, not one politician stood up and demanded the immediate sacking of the gardaí involved in the matter. Where does this leave a woman's rights while under arrest?
This is not just a matter about the two women on the Shell to Sea protest. It is about the rights of women under the present law system. Under the United Nations Charter of Human Rights, under Article 7, all are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law.

All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination. All means men and women alike and I consider the threat of rape while under arrest to be a violation of this declaration.
This year saw the 100th anniversary of International Woman's Day. This case shows just how much we have achieved in the 100 years. We can be still treated as second-class citizens, we do not have the protection of the law, and our rights can be waved away in government circles.
This matter of violation of women's right by the Garda Siochána show that women still live in the dark ages where men rule supported by state and church.

Yours in Peace
Mary Feeney,
Ballycroy.

This factually incorrect and probably libelous. Surprised any paper would publish such a totally inaccurate statement. it renders the rest of your letter unworthy of reading let alone comment.
