familyTHE popular Bertra beach in Murrisk, Westport, is in danger of losing its blue flag status.
A meeting of Mayo County Council's environmental strategic policy committee was told that opposition by the National Wildlife Trust to tackling erosion at the beauty spot is likely to have far-reaching repercussions.
The trust is concerned that moving heavy machinery onto the sand dunes as part of a remedial scheme will disturb a natural habitat for a rare type of snails and other wildlife.
Mayo County Council wrote to Environment Minister Phil Hogan in a bid to find a resolution to the impasse.
But Sean Smyth, senior executive officer with the council, told the committee that no direction had been given by the minister. A reply to the letter had not even been received, according to Mr. Smyth.
Anthony Brogan, representing the Environmental Network, said perhaps the council should consider hiring a local firm which was proficient in dealing with coastal erosion in a very environmental-friendly manner.
He stated the issue may impinge on Bertra's blue flag status unless it is addressed satisfactorily.
John Groden, a community representative on the committee, explained the problems at Bertra were caused by wave erosion and required specific works which did not appear to fall into line with the natural habitats directive.
If a solution is not found, however, the condition of the beach will continue to deteriorate.
"We need to find a resolution before it is too late. If we get another winter of storms, there will be nothing left at Bertra to protect. It's essential something is done immediately," he added.
Councillor Peter Flynn, chairman, said if the National Wildlife Trust is placing a veto on the remedial works, then it was important to meet the authority to hear its views.
"It has already been indicated that we should commission a report on the issue. But my understanding is that such a report would cost as much as the works itself.
"I believe it's in our interest to invite members of the trust to our next meeting in September to try and find a solution."
In response to a question by Councillor Michéal McNamara, Mr. Smyth said funding is not available to upgrade other beaches in the county to blue flag status.
An unsuccessful application was made in respect of Lacken Strand.
