mayo vecMayo Vocational Education Committee is at the pins of its collar in its efforts to maintain existing services. Dr. Katie Sweeney, chief executive officer, said the loss of 18 staff members, who are not being replaced, has placed enormous pressures on the authority and raised serious questions in terms of health and safety.
She explained the Department of Education issued a directive of VECs around the country seeking further redundancies.

But Mayo VEC is not affected by it because it cannot reduce its level of staff any further.
"What is happening is not sustainable. Employees are doing the jobs of two or three people and have been doping so for two years. It cannot go on," she stated.
Pat Kilbane, a member of the committee, said the situation is not going to get any better as further redundancies will be sought under the Croke Park Agreement.
