Long-serving Councillor Blackie Gavin has announced his decision to quit Castlebar Town Council.
The Fianna Fáil representative told The Connaught Telegraph he will not be contesting the next election to the authority in 2014. He has informed the members of the Castlebar Town FF Cumann of his
decision.
Councillor Gavin has been a member of the authority since 1991 and held the position of Mayor on three occasions. He was also elected to Mayo County Council for the first time in June 2009.
He explained: "I have reached the decision not to run in the next town council elections for a number of years.
"Firstly, I want to concentrate on retaining my seat on Mayo County Council. There is a danger of falling between two stools when contesting two elections.
"Secondly, I want to encourage more young members of the party to consider putting their name forward for the town council in four years time.
"We certainly need an injection of fresh blood and there is no better place to start in public life than at town council level."
