Westport to get new Coast Guard station

A NEW Coast Guard station will open in Westport next year, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring has announced.

The OPW has completed a feasibility study and provision has been made in the Coast Guard’s capital programme for 2015.

Minister Ring commented: “I am delighted this project is going ahead. This will be a vital life-saving facility and will be a huge boost to the dedicated men and women volunteers who give their time and commitment to the Coast Guard.” The new state-of-the-art station will include a small museum.

Agreement has been reached with all parties, which has cleared the way for the site transfer. This is expected to be processed over the next few weeks.

The relevant bodies continue to engage with the council to progress the project.
