Road crash victim named

The 18-year-old old youth killed in a road accident at Blacksod yesterday (Wednesday) evening has been named as Jonathan Shevlin from Carne, Belmullet.

Mr. Shevlin, who recently completed his Leaving Certificate, was the driver of a car which went out of control and crashed into a wall. He died at the scene despite medical attempts to save him.

A teenage friend of the dead youth, Niall McGonigle, was injured and was airlifted to Mayo General Hospital. His injuries are not regarded as life threatening.

The deceased is a son of Michael and Kathleen Shevlin, proprietors of a well-known hardware store in Belmullet. He is also survived by a younger brother.

Local Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway Walsh said that ‘a dark cloud has descended on Erris’ and the thoughts of the entire community were with the bereaved family.
