August commencement for Westport - Srah water scheme

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring has this evening confirmed that the Lough Mask Regional Water Supply Scheme Srah to Westport extension will go ahead shortly following signing of the contract between Irish Water and Ward & Burke Construction Ltd.

The expected commencement construction date is early next month. The projected contract duration is 12 months and the estimated cost is €7.1 million.

This major scheme ensures security of supply for current and future demands in the environs of Westport. It also facilitates planned connections and extensions, notably an increase of over 1,000 cubic metres per day to Allergan Pharmaceuticals Ireland.

The scheme, said Minister Ring, has the capacity to be further extended in the future towards Newport, Louisburgh and the region.

The project involves the construction of 27km of trunk main, a new reservoir at Carrowbaun, and multiple valve chambers and ancillary structures. It also includes some replacement of old water mains in the town.
