Rory oneill honoured for his courage and defiance at people of the year awards

Ballinrobe native Rory O’Neill, also known as Panti Bliss, was honoured on Saturday evening at the 40th People of the Year Awards, organised by Rehab and broadcast live on RTÉ One television from the Citywest Hotel, Dublin.

Rory was joined in the Citywest by his mother, family and friends, who travelled up for the event.

Rory, who was presented with his award by actor and comedian Stephen Fry, was honoured for his courage and defiance in fighting for freedom of expression and breaking down barriers to equality.

Well known in the gay community for many years, Rory caught the nation’s attention following an RTÉ interview and an emotional address from the stage of the Abbey Theatre describing the reality of everyday life for some members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community in Ireland. He has triggered national and international public debate on the notion of tolerance and equality for all members of society.

Rory admits that he never set out to become an activist, but his alter ego, Panti Bliss, has now become a poster-girl for Ireland’s equality campaign.

International supporters such as Stephen Fry, Graham Norton, Jonathan Ross and Madonna have helped drive an important conversation, one that can hopefully lead to a change in attitudes and a change in how people treat LGBT people in Ireland, and worldwide.

The prestigious awards provide a unique and special opportunity for the Irish public to honour and celebrate those extraordinary people among us who do ordinary things. Whether it’s brave acts by individuals or collectively by communities, it’s all about celebrating those who make a difference to our country every day.
