750000 for two castlebar road projects

Funding of €750,000 has been allocated for two road projects in Castlebar.

The first project is at Newline where €300,000 has been allocated to carry out work on the street, which has been a problem as far back as most residents of the town can remember. A further €450,000 has been allocated to complete works on the R311 (Newport Road).

Speaking about the positive developments, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said: “Newline in Castlebar has been a problem for over 50 years and I am delighted that it will finally be rectified. I remember it myself as a child and the fact that we now have €350,000 allocated to carry out works on the street is a very welcome development.”

The CPO work on the road has already begun and was confirmed last September. Work is expected to begin on the ground in the near future and to be completed by the end of the year.

The Newport Road project, said Mr. Kenny, will complete the upgrade of the road and cycle path to Rehins Wood and is part of a larger, ongoing plan to link Castlebar to the Great Western Greenway.

He commented: “This is good for tourism and makes the fantastic amenity at Rehins Wood very accessible to all.”
