Motorists advised to take extra care

MOTORISTS have been advised to exercise caution after Met. Eireann today issued a status Orange snow and ice warning for counties Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal.

The warning remains in place until 12 noon tomorrow, with snow accumulations of up to 8 cm. possible, especially on higher ground.

A less-severe status yellow snow & ice warning is in place for counties Roscommon and Galway, with up to 4 cm. of snow expected in these counties.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is warning drivers to take extra care and to remove all snow from vehicles before starting a journey.

The authority is warning of black ice and reduced visability during snow and hail showers, while Gardaí are also urging road users to be cautious.

Met. Eireann confirmed the cold weather will continue until Sunday.
