After a brisk day, voting has closed

VOTING in the general election closed an hour ago, with latest returns showing voter turnout in Mayo will be over 60%.

The latest figures, at 8 p.m., showed there was a 57% turnout at the Sean Duffy Centre in Ballina with two hours still left for people to cast their vote.

In Castlebar it ranged from 49% to 56% at that stage. Swinford National School was on a 54% turnout, with Claremorris Boys NS on 50%, as was Scoil Iosa in Ballyhaunis. Foxford New School was on 48%.

Counting in the Mayo constituency gets underway in Castlebar at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
