Burrishoole to host 29th annual walking festival

THIS June bank holiday weekend local and international walkers will be taking to the hills of Burrishoole, between Newport and Mulranny.

Some will enjoy the lofty heights of the surrounding hills off the Great Western Greenway while others will join lower level walks. Whichever one you choose, some things are guaranteed, like the scenery - looking out over Mayo's beautiful Clew Bay - and comradery along the way.

This is the 29th annual Burrishoole Walking Festival, a popular fixture on the June bank holiday weekend calendar.

Walkers of all ages and abilities are invited to this family-friendly festival, which kicks off on Saturday, June 4, with registration at Derrada Community Centre at 10.30 a.m. The walks start at 11 a.m. and there are two choices of walks - high and low level. All walks are led by local guides.

On Sunday, June 5, registration is again at Derrada Community Centre at 11 a.m. and there are also two levels of walks, high and low, starting at 11.15 a.m. Entertainment on the Sunday night is in Derrada centre at 9.30 p.m., plus the presentation of certs to all who take part.

Bank holiday Monday, June 6, will see the annual Mass celebrated at the Oghillie Mass Rock at 2 p.m. The ascent to the Mass rock starts at 12.30 p.m. and the Mass will be followed by refreshments and a raffle in Derrada Community Centre. Everyone is welcome.

Three days of walking is €35 and one day's walking is €20. These prices included a packed lunch.
