Death of widely respected Castlebar teacher

THE death has taken place at Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar, of Peter Filan, Rathruane, Bohola.

The deceased was a long-serving member of the teaching staff of St. Gerald’s College, Castlebar, before his retirement a number of years ago. During his career, he had been held in the highest regard by his students and teaching colleagues alike.

He instilled a love of Irish history in hundreds of pupils who passed through his class, a love that remained with them all their lives.

Peter, a good-natured and unassuming personality, served as editor of The Bohola Post, a much-loved publication which chronicled the events and achievements of a Mayo community on an annual basis.

Deepest sympathy is extended to his sons Kevin and Sean, daughters Oonagh, Sinead and Mary, brother Padraic, sister Therese, 10 grandchildren, relatives and friends.

His remains will be reposing at the Sheridan Memorial Community Centre, Bohola, on Thursday evening from 5 o’clock with removal to the Church of the Immaculate Conception and St. Joseph, Bohola, arriving at 8 o’clock.

Burial takes place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bohola, on Friday following Requiem Mass for the repose of his soul at 12 noon.
