Gardaí issue bank holiday weekend safety appeal

AHEAD of the June bank holiday weekend, gardaí are appealing to motorists and motorcyclists to slow down, wear seatbelts and never drink and drive.

So far this year, 10 people have died in road collisions in the western region – three in Mayo, two in Roscommon and five in Galway.

Speaking on Midwest Radio, Superintendent Noel Kelly of the regional traffic unit said bank holiday weekends are high-risk periods due to high volumes of traffic on the road network.

He added that school holidays are also starting for secondary school students and more families will be on the move throughout the region.
