€2.3 million boost for Mayo farmers

FARMERS in Mayo are to get over €2.3 million in final instalments of BPS payments, which begin this week.

Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed has confirmed that the final instalment of payments under the 2015 Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) and Greening for farmers in Mayo begin this week.

Farmers in the county are to get a total of €2,306,165.72.

Welcoming the payments, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said the rollout brings the total amount paid under the BPS to €1.2 billion, with over 126,000 farmers across Ireland having received payment to date.

Commented Mr. Kenny: “Taken together with payments under the Areas of Natural Constraints Scheme, this represents a total of over €1.4 billion in direct payments to farmers since last September.

This is a very significant financial boost for farmers in Mayo. It’s also very good news for the rural economy in the county and will have a knock-on effect on many local businesses.”
