New cathaoirleach Al makes Knock airport his top priority

SECURING long term State investment for Ireland West Airport Knock has been identified by the new Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Al McDonnell, as his number one priority for the coming year.

After his unanimous selection as cathaoirleach yesterday (Monday), Councillor McDonnell outlined that due to the efforts of the council, the short term future of the airport is secure.

However, he stressed that long term investment of €35 million is needed for a facility on which the long term economic success of the region depends.

Referring to more ‘domestic’ matters - issues within the county council itself - the new cathaoirelach said: “Due to a number of factors morale is low within the workforce.”He did not elaborate on his concerns.

However, Councillor McDonnell pledged to his utmost to improve matters as “unless morale is at its highest, productivity suffers.”

The new cathaoirleach brings a wealth of experience with him to the position of chair.

He is the longest serving member of the authority, having joined in 1987 as replacement for Padraig Flynn when he was first made a government minister.

The Fianna Fáil man previously served as cathaoirleach in 1998/1999.
Councillor McDonnell was proposed for the chair by Councillor Damian Ryan.

His nomination was seconded by Councillor Annie May Reape.

Outgoing cathaoirleach Michael Holmes received lavish praise for his “professionalism and impartiality” in office.

Chief executive Peter Hynes joined in the tributes, saying Councillor Holmes had been a very effective first citizen, particularly in terms of the Westport to Achill Greenway becoming a reality.

Westport based Independent Councillor Christy Hyland was unanimously elected leas-cathaoirleach.
