Bones found in the cave.

Cave location to remain a mystery for now

THE exact location of the newly discovered cave near Newport, in which ancient bones were found last week, will remain a mystery for now.

Writing on his Wild Nephin Mountains Facebook blog, Michael Chambers, who stumbled upon a set of caves by accident, said that as investigations are ongoing he can't yet reveal the location of the caves.

Having found a large cave on one of his regular adventures on the hills, Michael returned with some friends and Nephin Begers Hill Walking Group members.

He explained: “As with trying to find a hidden area, the second time I led the group into a different cave, it's opening much the same and right beside the first cave.

I went in to lead the way but once inside realised it was the wrong cave. I shouted out it was the wrong one but come in anyway and have a look.

It was then that I saw and picked up a bowl like shape that was like dry clay. I showed it to the others and we were puzzled.”

As they looked around they found more bones, and the entire find is now being examined by anthropologists.

Once those examinations are complete Michael and the 'Begers' will reveal all, as they did with their last find, the Correen Caves, which he came across nearly two years ago.

As the new caves are unknown and there is no record of them Michael has decided to name them Begers Caves after the group who were with him when the second cave was discovered.

He added: “A special word of thanks has to go out to the fox who led me up to the area where I found the caves.”
