Death of former Mayo Gaelic football star

THE death has taken place in Dublin of former Mayo Gaelic football star Greg Maher.

A native of Knock Road, Claremorris, the deceased partnered Michael Fitzmaurice (captain) in the middle of the field when Mayo won the All-Ireland minor final in 1985.

Four years later he played at right-half forward on the Mayo senior team that lost narrowly to Cork in 1989 All-Ireland senior final.

Greg also played at all levels for Claremorris and was regarded as one of the best underage players ever to come from the area.

The people of Claremorris, as well as the GAA fraternity throughout the county and further afield, were saddened on learning of Greg's untimely death.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

The chairman of the Mayo GAA Board, Mike Conneely, said Greg's passing had evoked immense shock and sorrow within GAA circles locally and nationally.

'He played at all levels of inter-county football for Mayo with his brother, Sean, and Greg was regarded as one of the outstanding midfielders and half forwards of his generation.

'We extend our deepest sympathy to the Maher family on their loss.'
