'Heritage' postbox stolen from Mayo village

AN Post has confirmed the theft of what's described as ‘a heritage’ postbox from its location at Logaphuill, Belcarra.

The postbox, which has been in situ since before the foundation of the State, went missing some weeks ago.

An Post has promised the box will be replaced.

“We are aware the old box, a heritage model, has been stolen,” a spokesman said.

There have been a number of thefts of older postboxes throughout the country in recent times. This underlines their extra value as heritage items.

An Post says that it tries to replace missing old style boxes with similar vintage models but this isn't always possible.
