Call for An Taoiseach to intervene in Mayo GMIT campus crisis

THE founder of the Mayo RTC campaign has reacted with disappointment and shock to reports today that Dr. Deirdre Garvey has stepped down as head of the Mayo Campus of GMIT after four years in the position.

Castlebar-based Paddy McGuinness, a former Fine Gael councillor who now chairs the Western Development Commission, said her departure represented a huge loss for the facility at a time when there is growing speculation in regard to its future.

He stated: “While no statement has been issued by Dr. Garvey, I believe her decision signals how critical the position is at the Mayo campus.

“She has done great service and it's now time for An Taoiseach Enda Kenny to intervene and ensure the facility is safeguarded for future generations of west of Ireland students.

Mayo Fianna Fáil Deputy Lisa Chambers wished Dr. Garvey every success in her future career.

“I think there are huge pressures at the campus, especially from a financial perspective, and it is important that action is taken immediately to address those problems.

“Dr. Garvey will be a huge loss to the Castlebar institute but we now need certainty going forward and I hope her replacement is appointed as swiftly as possible. The campus requires leadership and direction like never before.”

Deputy Chambers is still awaiting replies to a number of parliamentary questions she tabled in the past number of weeks in repect of the future of the Mayo third level college.
