Work starts on velorail project

WORK has commenced in recent days on the velorail project in Kiltimagh.

Phase one of the development will see the clearing of six kilometres of the old disused railway track from Kiltimagh to Swinford.

Kiltimagh IRD has confirmed that following this there will be the clearing of the track on the other side of the station area, towards Claremorris.

Some reinstatement and upgrading/repairs will also be necessary.

In tandem with of this, work on designing and producing the pedal-powered railcars to go on the track will be taking place.

A statement on the IRD website said: “This velorail project is a unigue and historic project that has the capacity to make the biggest economic development contribution to Mayo tourism since the advent of the Great Western Greenway.”
