Investment approved for two Mayo secondary schools

THE Department of Education has given the go-ahead for additional classrooms at Balla Secondary School and Rice College, Westport.

Minister of State Michael Ring stated funding has been sanctioned for a two classroom 292 square metre ASD unit, a 110 square-metre science lab and prep area as well as the provision of acoustic enhancement in the PE Hall of Balla Secondary School.

Approval has also been granted for a revised proposal of works that are needed at Rice College in Westport.

Said Minister Ring: “This is an issue that I have made numerous representations on and I am delighted now that the funding which was previously allocated has been increased accordingly.”

The additional accommodation approved for Rice College includes the provision of one 100 square-metre science lab, eight general classrooms, nine standard WCs and one WC for assisted users.

The revised scope of works/budget also includes front-loaded toilet works and a new designated drop-off, pick-up point close to the main entrance, works to address access issues and some external works.

“The current school building for Rice College was constructed and opened 1988. Other than a small extension in 2012 and some other very minor projects the school building is the same as that constructed almost thirty years ago.”

“I hope the works approved will further enhance this school for the pupils,” added Minister Ring.
