North Mayo mourns following cyclist's death

A 54-year-old cyclist who was critically injured in a road collision on Sunday passed away early today (Wednesday) at Mayo University Hospital.

Patrick McHale (54), Rathglass West, Knockanillaun, Ballina, was airlifted to hospital in Castlebar on Sunday evening following the collision at Rathroen on the main Ballina to Killala Road.

Mr. McHale, a married man with three grown up children, was passionate about cycling.

The impact, which also involved a car travelling in the same direction, occurred only about two miles from his home.

It is understood the deceased's wife, Collette, and their three children. Patrick, Darren and Melody, were at their loved one's bedside when he passed away.

Along with Collette, Mr. McHale had been a committed member of Ballycastle Cycling Club up to last year but they then switched membership to the newly formed Cooneal Cycling Club which is nearer their home.

A member of Ballycastle Cycling Club said that local communities throughout north Mayo are devastated by the tragedy.

“Patrick was always on the road participating in charity and other events,” the club spokesman recalled.

“We did the Ring of Kerry together about three years ago,” he added.

Killala based Jarlath Munnelly, an elected member of Mayo County Council, related this morning how Patrick had been a skilful soccer player in his younger days before he switched to cycling.

'He was such a fit man, always healthy,' Councillor Munnelly said.

“When I heard he was injured I really believed his fitness and strength would stand to him, that he would survive despite the seriousness of his injuries.”

The councillor added: “Our thoughts are with the family at this hugely sad time.”
