Emerald Isle Explorer steams through Mayo

THE Emerald Isle Explorer No. 4 steam train visited Claremorris, Westport and Ballina earlier this week on a five-day nationwide tour.

Christy Lawless captured this photograph of the train at Ballyvary Railway Station on its way from Ballina and Foxford to Claremorris and Westport.

The Steam Dreams Rail Tour – taking in Dublin, Belfast, Bangor, Co. Down, Rosslare, Killarney, Portarlington, Claremorris, Westport and Ballina - is part of the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland's way of preserving and sharing our rich heritage in rail travel in Ireland since the mid 1800s.

Ballyvary station opened in 1894, serving the catchment areas of Turlough, Parke, Crimlin, Straide, Bohola, Ballyvary and Keelogues.
