Gourmet hamper company is online

A LOVE of fly-fishing brought Debbie Meadows and her husband to Mayo where she has set up Greedy Goose Hampers, an online company offering a wide selection of distinctive gourmet Irish hamper gifts with stylish presentation. Based in Swinford, Greedy Goose Hampers has been growing steadily since it was launched in 2014, writes Tom Gillespie.

Debbie spent her first 32 years in West Africa before moving to the UK in 1989 where she was involved in the IT sector. In 2003 the couple moved to Ireland.

Explained Debbie: “We settled in Swinford because it was central to the most beautiful fishing spots in Ireland. We are both very keen fly-fishers and we visited Mayo for several years, spending more and more time here as we always wanted to go fishing on Lough Conn.

Greedy Goose Hampers came about because of my passion for gourmet food but as I also have an IT background, combining both a website and food together seemed a very logical marriage. The idea had been in the back of my mind for years waiting for just the right time and the right opportunity to came along.

That happened in December 2013. I woke up at four o’clock one morning, the whole concept clear in my head, and I woke my husband and said, ‘I am setting up a hamper business and it is going to be called Greedy Goose Hampers’.

I researched the hamper industry for three months and I felt there was a niche market for gourmet, luxury Irish foods. I visit artisan suppliers and trade shows to find the very best award-winning produce. Our hampers include wines, champagnes, cheese, relishes, organic smoked salmon, chocolates and all sorts of gourmet treats.

Our range includes 280 products at the height of our busy season at Christmas. I take a traditional approach to gift hampers and focus on sourcing and supplying quality Irish artisan foods.

A most unusual and unique recent addition to our wine list was recently featured on The Late Late Show called Irish Peat Wine - a lovely smooth red pinot noir grape infused with Irish peat from Limerick. There is a news feature on our website giving the detail of how it was grown and produced.”

Customers can go online to www.greedygoosehampers.ie and select a gift from a category to suit a particular event or occasion - a birthday, wedding celebration, anniversaries or Christmas gift.

Hampers are priced from €22 to family hampers of €500 and there is a €5.84 charge for next day delivery in Ireland. Debbie has received a number of orders from families in the USA, Australia and New Zealand for family back home in Ireland. The most popular hamper is the Irish cheese board and wine. They also provide a high volume bespoke gift service to corporate businesses who send Christmas gifts to clients and staff.

Said Debbie: “Every order is special to us and we ensure each gift is beautifully presented and finished with a hand- tied ribbon and personalised greeting card. After all, first impressions count when you give a present, no matter whether it is a small token or a significant gesture.”
