Lion's mane jellyfish spotted in Achill

A LION's mane jellyfish has been spotted in Achill.

The island's Coast Guard yesterday posted a photograph of the creature on its Facebook page.

The large jellyfish, which can have tentacles measuring over 35 metres long, was seen at Cloughmore.

The €20 note in the picture was to give an indication of the size of the beast, the post outlined.

The jellyfish have hundreds of long hair-like tentacles and can cause a very severe sting to bathers.

Any stings from this creature should be treated by a medical professional.

The unit has also reported that earlier this week the unit's D Class boat along, with the Achill RNLI, were tasked to a broken down boat off of Purteen Harbour.

“The area has a rocky shore and very limited areas of safe refuge. Both the main and backup engines of the boat had failed. Fortunately local fishermen were nearby to also assist. The boat was towed safely back to the harbour. Well done to all involved including the local fishermen,†stated a spokesperson.
