Extra Reek Sunday Masses announced for base of 'Holy Mountain'

CONSERVATION of Ireland's 'Holy Mountainâ€, which is hugely utilised by get-fit enthusiasts, as well as the prayerful, is foremost in the minds of church authorities in the run-up to the annual Croagh Patrick pilgrimage.

Fr. Charlie McDonnell, administrator of Westport Parish, has announced extra Masses near the base of the mountain both on Saturday and Sunday morning to facilitate pilgrims who might not be be fit enough for the arduous, 2,510 foot, haul to the oratory on the summit.

Fr. McDonnell said the extra masses might also help to save the mountain from 'wear and tear' and reduce the injury rate amongst climbers.

He quoted just released figures which showed that 122,000 people climbed the mountain in 2016 and there were 47 callouts with the highest concentration of injuries amongst those in the 61 to 70 age bracket.â€

“Do not put yourself in any danger,†Fr. McDonnell appealed to intending pilgrims today(Thursday).

The extra Mass on Saturday will be celebrated at 9 a.m. close to the statue at the base of the mountain and on Sunday morning, at 8.30 a.m.in Lecanvey Church.

In another change to the usual Mass format, Masses on Sunday in the mountaintop oratory will be celebrated on an hourly rather than half hour basis.

Sunday's pilgrimage will clash with the All-Ireland football quarter finals in which three western counties, Mayo, Galway and Roscommon are involved. This has led to speculation that the pilgrimage turnout may be diminished.

However, Fr. McDonnell is sceptical of lower numbers stating that “the real diehards†always participate.

He did appeal though for those considering the 'double', the Reek Sunday pilgrimage in the early hours before dashing off to Croke Park, to be “sensible and prudent†and bring along a driver fresh for the journey.

Both the Order of Malta and Mayo Mountain Rescue have warned of dangerous prevailing conditions and have stressed the importance of climbers being suitably equipped for all weather.

They caution: “It is imperative that suitable footwear be worn, along with warm clothes and rain gear, as well as sun protection.

“All climbers should also bring a plentiful supply of water and snacks, while extra care must also be taken with children on the mountain.â€
