Senior Mayo officers among list of garda promotions

A SENIOR garda who has served in Castlebar and other parts of the Mayo Garda Division in recent years is to be promoted to the rank of superintendent.

Inspector Tom Calvey, a native of Aclare, Co. Sligo, is one of 18 members of the force nationwide, who are currently inspectors, to be promoted.

Ten garda members currently working as superintendents are to be promoted to the post of chief superintendents.,

These include Supt. Tony Healy who is currently in charge of the Belmullet Garda District.

Supt Healy has played a key role in the Rescue 116 effort which is still continuing off the north west coast.

At a sitting of Castlebar District Court, Inspector Calvey was congratulated on his pending appointment.

Judge Mary Devins said she was 'not one bit surprised' by the elevation.

Peter Mooney of the Courts Service, Judy Quinlan of the Probation Services and Mayo State Solicitor, Vincent Deane, joined in the felicitations.

Mr. Deane stated: “I hope we don't lose him (from the Mayo area). He is a pleasure to work with.â€

It is not yet known to what area the new superintendents will be posted.

Twenty eight senior officers have been approved by the government for appointment to key areas.
