Four injured in motorbike pile-up at Islandeady

FOUR people were transferred by ambulance to Mayo University Hospital this morning following a collision between a number of motorcyclists at Islandeady, near Castlebar.

None of the injuries are understood to be life threatening.

The impact occurred on a bend around 10 a.m.

Following the multi-vehicle collision, an eyewitness reported that several bikes were strewn on the road and number of casualties were being treated by paramedics at the scene prior to their transfer to hospital. They included three motorcyclists and one motorist.

There were long traffic hold-ups for a time on the N5 between Castlebar and Westport for a time as emergency services and gardai attended to the incident.

It is understood those injured in the pile-up are members of a motorcycle group visiting from continental Europe.

The road has reopened.
