Community in mourning following quad tragedy

A MAN in his sixties died yesterday evening (Thursday) in a quad bike tragedy in Co. Mayo.

The fatal accident occurred at around half past six on farmland near the village of Ballyheane, Castlebar.

It is understood the victim, a farmer, died when his quad bike overturned.

The remains of the deceased, who is not being named by gardaí until all relatives have been informed, have been taken to Mayo University Hospital. A post-mortem will take place today.

Both the gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) are to investigate.

The tragic death is the second farm fatality in the Republic this week. On Tuesday, Martin Kehoe Jnr., a son of Martin Kehoe, the world renowned ploughman, died in an agricultural accident involving a molasses tank.

Mr. Kehoe's death cast a cloud over the National Ploughing Championships, which took place this week in Co. Offaly.
