'Wheelie bin basher' causes rural road mayhem

RESIDENTS of rural communities in the Swinford area have been stunned by the behaviour of a motorist along a normally quiet 'back road'.

The driver ploughed into numerous wheelie bins left out ahead of collection last week.

A number of bins were turned over and damaged, with refuse spread all over roads and ditches.

The person responsible has been dubbed 'the wheelie bin basher'.

Bins were struck along a stretch of roadway over a few miles some time over Thursday night/Friday morning from villages near Swinford and on in the direction of Knock airport.

One householder, who called The Connaught Telegraph about the matter, stated: “It was the height of lunacy but highly dangerous.

It appears someone in a car was happy just to smash into people’s bins, damaging them and causing rubbish to fly everywhere.

I never saw the likes of it before and it must have caused some damage to the vehicle.

I could not believe it when my neighbours down the road told me what they found in the morning.

It seems the driver went for some miles ploughing down wheelie bins.

Some have an idea of what the car looked like and it is planned to forward a description to An Garda Síochána. This kind of behaviour is completely out of order and whoever is responsible needs to be brought to heel.”

When contacted earlier this week, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said a complaint had not yet been received at that stage.
