Bishop Brendan Kelly appointed to Galway diocese

BISHOP Brendan Kelly has been appointed the new Bishop of the Catholic diocese of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora.

He succeeds Bishop Martin Drennan who retired in mid 2016.

The 71-year-old moves to Galway from the diocese of Achonry, where he has served since 2007.

Born in Ballinakill, Bishop Kelly was ordained in 1971 and taught at Coláiste Éinde in Salthill. He subsequently worked in Gort, where he was President of Our Lady’s College until 1995.

He was appointed Parish Priest of Lisdoonvarna the following year and moved to An Spidéal in 2003.

Bishop Kelly’s ‘Installation Ceremony’ will take place in the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and Saint Nicholas in Galway city next February.
