Mayo farming leader seeking FF 'Euro' nomination

THE former president of the ICMSA is being nominated to contest the 2019 European Parliament elections.

John Comer's name has been put forward for a candidacy by his local Ballyvary Fianna Fáil Cumann.

His nomination was confirmed at a meeting of the organisation over the weekend, at which Mr. Comer was in attendance.

It was proposed by Councillor Blackie Gavin and seconded by Councillor Al McDonnell.

Both councillors were fulsome in their praise of Mr. Comer and his skills as a representative for the region.

A farmer based at Boleyard, Ballyvary, Mr. Comer is a full-time member of the European Parliament's economics committee, based in Brussels.

His planned entry into political life does not come as a surprise as he had been linked with party nominations.

He developed a very high profile for himself during his six years at the head of the ICMSA and his performances on national TV and radio earned him a great deal of kudos.

His nomination now goes forward to be rubber-stamped by the Mayo Fianna Fáil Dáil Ceanntair in the coming weeks.
