Mayo fire units at scene of blaze at Castlebar Roadstone plant

MAYO'S fight-fighting services are this evening dealing with an emergency in the tarmacadam plant at Roadstone, Moneen, in Castlebar.

Members of Castlebar and Westport brigades, four units in all, were called to the scene at around 6.30 p.m. after the alarm was raised. It is reported that no injuries have occurred.

The units are awaiting the arrival of ESB personnel to disconnect the electricity supply from the building which is in flames and black smoke can be seen in the sky over the county town, although it is being blown in an easterly direction away from the town.

Mayo Chief Fire Officer, Seamus Murphy, is at the scene and directing operations. It is expected to take several hours before the fire is brought under control.

It is understood a crane is to be erected in order for deal with the flames.

The site is well off the main roads and there are no traffic restrictions in the general area at this point. Every effort is being take to prevent the fire spreading.
