Mayo footballers seek Oskars glory

A MAYO footballer starring in The Full Monty?

Hold on to your hormones ladies – it's all in aid of a great cause as Breaffy GAA Club's county stars are getting ready to hit the big screen to raise funds for their club.

Six Mayo and Breaffy footballers are among 70 local actors bidding for Oskars glory in the Breaffy GAA Oskars.

The three O’Shea brothers – Seamie, Aidan and Conor – together with Rob Hennelly, Michael Hall and Matthew Ruane are ditching the football jerseys for Hollywood glamour as seven well-known films are recorded by locals for Oskars night, taking place on Friday, May 11.

Filming started last weekend around Breaffy and Castlebar on The Field, Fatal Attraction, The Snapper, The Shawshank Redemption, The Full Monty, Sister Act and Forrest Gump.

All-Star footballer Aidan O’Shea is one of the cast in the iconic '90s film The Full Monty. Aidan plays the role of Horse.

The film’s producer, Caroline Costello, would not disclose how revealing O’Shea’s role is.

Seamie O’Shea will play a Dub in The Snapper. Seamie O’Shea will play Lester, one of Dessie Curley’s drinking buddies, played in the film by Brendan Gleeson.

Well-known for his mimicry skills, Conor O'Shea is the lead actor in the gripping Fatal Attraction, playing the role of Dan Gallagher. All-Ireland minor and Under 21 winning Mayo footballer Matthew Ruane also features as Jimmy.

Filming on the condensed films – each expected to be approximately 10 minutes long – will continue next weekend, after which further details will be revealed.

There is already huge demand for tickets for Oskars night. For further details on the night itself and a range of fundraisers taking place locally in the run up to it, see the Breaffy GAA Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/breaffy.gaa/.
