Early indications are Mayo favours repeal

EARLY tally indications from the Mayo constituency suggest a victory for the ‘Yes’ lobby in the referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment.

Boxes in the Ballina area were first opened. Tallies indicate that voters in both urban and rural areas favour repeal of the 8th Amendment.

Boxes from polling stations at national schools Creevagh, Attymass and Foxford were the first opened.

Next being opened are boxes from Claremorris, Castlebar and Westport.

Tally teams from both the Yes and No camps are out in force at the count centre, a former nightclub, Panama Jack’s, at the TF Royal Hotel in Castlebar.

As the count began, Dualta Roughneen of the Mayo No campaign reflected on last night's exit poll which indicated a strong ‘Yes’ vote nationally.

“I hope this is not reflected in the actual count,” he said.
