€2.3m. funding for Ireland West Airport Knock

AN allocation of €2.3 million for Ireland West Airport Knock has been made by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Michael Ring said it has been confirmed to him that the facility is to receive €2.3m, which will go towards capital investments in the areas of safety and security at the airport.

The funding is part of a €3.85m allocation for regional airports, with Knock getting significantly more than the other recipients, Donegal and Kerry.

Said Minister Ring: “There is a continuing commitment by the government in Project Ireland 2040 to support safety and security related projects at regional airports such as Knock under the Regional Airports Programme. The grant allocations announced today underpin this commitment.

Ireland West Airport Knock is vital for the economy in Mayo and the entire western region. The value of having an international airport in our county cannot be underestimated.

It brings tourists directly into Mayo and is a significant incentive for potential investors. The airport provides us with direct flights to London and host of other European destinations. It is also a major provider of local jobs in east Mayo and a huge driver of the local economy.

Crucially, Project Ireland 2040 designates Knock as one of the four main airports in the country and commits to further financial investment. The airport is also recognised as a Strategic Development Zone. I believe the future is bright.”
