Some of the lucky cats, but lots of others need your help.

Rescue shelter can't take in any new animals

THE Mayo SPCA cannot take in new animals that need rescuing due to a lack of funds. The difficult decision was taken yesterday evening due to a lack of resources.

An urgent fundraising drive is now underway to keep the doors open for new arrivals who need their help.

A statement on their Facebook page yesterday evening explained the situation: “We are in the sad position this evening of realising that we no longer have the resources to accept any new animals into the shelter. This is a horrible position to be in as the calls just keep coming. Litters of kittens. Feral cats in need of help. So many kittens.

We've had some cruelty cases lately that thankfully we can respond to but these take up a huge amount of money in vets bills, etc., not that we begrudge it for a second, but the reality is that our funds are seriously low.

We have been asking for help with fundraising and we are asking again. Please, please help us.

If we had a few people to organise events and raise some funds for us it would directly help the animals in your community. Fundraising events can be big or small. Cake sales, quizzes, coffee mornings, whatever anyone can think up.

If people could help with this it leaves Marian and the kennel team free to do what they are desperately needed to do, which is care for the animals in the shelter (and that is A LOT at present), answer the phones, pay bills, organise vet visits and transport, and these are just a few things that make up their days.

For the animals in your localities - the feral cats, the sick kittens, the abandoned litters, the dogs at roadsides, the unwanted, the injured and the lost, please, please help us to help them.

Fundraising is the only chance we have of being able to take in animals, especially in the cattery, at the moment.

Please share this with anyone you can think of who might be interested in fundraising and be able to assist us.

Thank you in advance.”
