Development of sports hubs is key priority for Mayo Sports Partnership

A TOTAL OF 21,004 people participating in 57 local programmes across the county last year, according to the annual report published by the Mayo Sports Partnership.

Launching the  report outgoing chairman, Councillor Brendan Mulroy, thanked all partners, stakeholders and community volunteers who are at the heart of all sport development within the county.

The report, describing the workings of the Sports Partnership during 2017, highlighted the involvement of 567 people with a disability in 23 programmes, including Westport United's “Soccer for All” initiative.

Other highlights from the report demonstrates that Mayo Sports Partnership and its stakeholders provided physical activity opportunities for some 14,942 children, 4,696 women participated in seven local Women in Sport programmes with 786 volunteers supporting the delivery of sports programmes countywide.

In addition, the sports umbrella body ran 25 training and education workshops with 711 participants, supplied information to 580 clubs and organisations and 12,656 people were provided with general or specific sport-related information through MSP online, social media or text promotion.

Councillor Mulroy also thanked key stakeholders John Treacy and staff in Sport Ireland, CEO of Mayo County Council Peter Hynes, Director of Services Catherine McConnell, along with the many other partners who contribute to the continued development of the umbrella sports body.

“It’s a tribute to the hardworking staff of Mayo Sports Partnership that such a wide variety of accessible participation opportunities are provided throughout the county in partnership with so many groups and clubs," added Councillor Mulroy.

The current priorities of the organisation include the provision of Community Sports Hubs in Ballyhaunis and Ballinrobe and the creation of a sports equipment library thanks to Healthy Ireland funding.
