Row over out-of-order CCTV camera in busy Mayo town

A row has erupted over a public CCTV camera being out of order for weeks in a busy Mayo town.

A local elected representative, Councillor Christy Hyland, said a serious assault took place on a teenager in Ballina some weeks ago.

But despite the incident having occurred directly under the CCTV camera in question, nothing of the incident was recorded to furnish evidence to the gardaí.

He claimed the delay in having it repaired was as a result of two government departments – justice and the environment - arguing over who should pay to fix it.

“It is not good enough and local authorities have to take more responsibility for these type of issues,” he said.
