Drug detections in county increased last year

SOME 250 drug offences were detected in Co. Mayo last year.

The figures – described as 'a huge increase' – were revealed by Chief Supt. Pat Diskin at a meeting of the Mayo Joint Policing Committee today (Friday).

There were 51 sale or supply detections in 2018 – an increase of 122% on the previous year.

Possession of drugs for personal use rose by 46% to 174 detections, while cultivation came in at 25 detections – up seven per cent.

The Chief Supt. said that drugs are to be found in every town and village.

A commitment was given in 2018 to increase garda activity in this area with the drugs unit joined by every other unit in enforcing it.

Councillor Damien Ryan wondered if there was any proposal to increase numbers in the drugs unit.

He suggested a pilot programme for south Mayo where the influence from Galway city was 'unbelieveable'.

Teachers were bringing issues to his attention, Councillor Ryan said, and he described the situation as an 'epidemic'.

Councillor Christy Hyland seconded the proposal that the drugs unit be increased.
