Belmullet emerge as the dark horse as champions make the cut

CHAMPIONS Ballintubber have booked their place in the last eight of the Mayo senior football championship along with Breaffy with both sides topping their respective groups.

Knockmore are still in with a big chance of taking second spot despite losing to Ballintubber in round 2 at the weekend.

The Breaffy v Kiltane game was held up for over half an hour due to an injury to Kiltane player Tony Gaughan who suffered a leg injury and was removed to hospital.

Davitts put themslves in a strong positon to take seecond spot in the same group by defeating Bohola-Moy Davitts and it is now between themslves and Kiltane for that second place.

But the big surprise result of the weekend was Belmullet's victory over Claremorris and that puts them into the last eight along with Ballaghaderreen who defeated Charlestown with Belmullet on top on score difference.

Castlebar Mitchels defeated Westport to move top of their group but they will need to get something from their final game against Aghamore who are now on two points along with Ballina after the sides drew in their second round clash.

In the intermediate championship Ardnaree Sarsfields are on top of Group 1 and are guaranteed a place in the last eight after defeating Crossmolina with Bonniconlon in a strong position to take second spot following a big win over Swinford

In Group 2 wins for Park-Keelogues-Crimlin and Burrishoole have them jointly heading the table on three points, Burrishoole on top on score difference but Balla could have a say in this group yet if they can beat Burrishoole.

Group 3 is headed by The Neale who defeated Ballyhaunis and are now a shoe-in for a place in the knockout stages with Mayo Gaels also now in the mix after a good win over Ballinrobe but Ballyhaunis are no out of it either, while in Group 4 Kiltimagh and Louisburgh are through.
