Turlough Road, Castlebar

josie livingstoneAs briefly reported the death took place at his residence Turlough Road, Castlebar on January 23rd of Joseph (Josie) Livingstone. His passing after a short illness removed from the town one of its best known personalities.
Only child of Anthony and Mary Ann Livingstone he was born in Castle Street in 1922, the family moving soon after to Newantrim Street.
After leaving school he emigrated to England working in the coalmines in Yorkshire for a time. Returning to Castlebar he was apprenticed to Tony Brett, the renowned painter and decorator.
In 1949 he set up business on his own. His expertise and workmanship soon won for him many contracts especially with the Board of Works and Texaco Oil Company and in later years with Baxter Healthcare. During the winter periods Josie sought work far from home. He retired in 1988 with his son Pat continuing the proud family decorating and painting tradition.



Blackfort, Castlebar

johnny bourkeThe death has taken place recently of Mr. Johnny Bourke, Blackfort, Castlebar, a popular member of the business community in Castlebar.
He was a native of Cashel, Ayle and worked for a number of years in the Sales Department of Josie Bourke's Garage, Castlebar.
Johnny oftentimes recalled memories from those days working in the Castlebar garage. It was not unusual for Johnny to sell a car to a customer and when the deal was complete to give the buyer their first driving lesson.
For many buyers it was their first car and they had no driving experience. A number of years ago he set up his own farm machinery sales and repair garage at his home in Blackfort, Castlebar.



Lower James Street, Claremorris

betty killeenBetty Killeen (nee Noone), Lower James Street, Claremorris, whose sudden death occurred on January 13, was one of the town's best-known figures. She commanded popularity from people of all ages, and the esteem in which she was held was evidenced by the extraordinary numbers who turned out to pay their final respects at the funeral ceremonies.
Young and old mourned her passing. She had reared 11 children, and just recently her 30th grandchild was born, and among the many tributes paid to her was that "she loved each and every one of those children and grandchildren as if they were the only one she had".
Betty Noone and her twin sister Ina were born to Peter and Sarah Noone, Mount Street, Claremorris, on March 5, 1934. She enjoyed an idyllic childhood, and was a keen sportswoman, playing both camogie and tennis.


Ballindine, Claremorris. Formerly of Derrycoosh, Castlebar

joe ruddyThe death took place recently of Mr. Joe Ruddy, Ballindine, Claremorris, and formerly of Derrycoosh, Castlebar. Joe was a native of Westport where his family lived at Church Lane. The Ruddys are a popular and respected Westport family.
Like many young people of his generation, Joe emigrated to England where he qualified as a radio officer with the Royal Air Force. He later worked on the development of the Sellafield reprocessing plant in Wales where he gained valuable experience, which stood to him in later life.
